106th anniversary of the Pilgrimage to the Haller’s Army Cemetery in Niagara-on-the-Lake
This past Sunday, June 8th, the Polish community in Niagara-on-the-Lake held a significant commemoration at Haller Army Cemetery, marking over a century of remembrance. Dozens gathered to honor 26 Polish and Canadian volunteers who died from the 1918 influenza while training at Camp Kościuszko, intended for Poland’s independence fight. The event featured a solemn procession led by Cmdr. Adam Dawik with the Lincoln and Welland Regiment Band, a Catholic Mass at St. Vincent de Paul’s chapel, and a wreath-laying at the cenotaph. Poland’s Ambassador to Canada, Witold Dzielski, spoke about the personal significance of the cemetery as a symbol of Polish-Canadian ties, a sentiment echoed by attendees like Sophie Poradzisz, who honored local journalist Elizabeth Ascher. The day’s events served to bridge past and present, keeping alive the memory of “Little Poland” and the sacrifices made, reflecting a deep gratitude in Polish-Canadian history.
